How long a microwave should last

Is it worth repairing?
This is the appliance where replacement most often wins, and we would rather say that at the door than after a diagnostic. Door switches, turntable motors and control panels are worth repairing on a built-in or over-the-range unit, where replacing means matching a cabinet opening. On a countertop microwave, most repairs cost more than the machine. A magnetron failure on any microwave past seven or eight years is almost always a replacement.

Why is my microwave sparking?

Can I repair a microwave myself?
Simple parts, yes: a turntable roller, coupler, or grease filter. Anything inside the cabinet, no. The high-voltage capacitor can stay charged after the microwave is unplugged, and the door interlocks have to be set so the oven can never run with the door open. Those repairs belong with a technician.
Does over-the-range or built-in change the repair?
Yes. An over-the-range microwave hangs on a wall plate and is bolted through the upper cabinet, so most internal repairs mean taking it down, which is a two-person lift.
