1. Clean the Filter
Most modern dishwashers have a manual filter at the bottom of the tub. Remove it monthly and rinse under running water. Use a soft brush to remove stuck food particles. A clogged filter is one of the first things to check whenever cleaning gets worse or water is left in the bottom.
2. Clean the Spray Arms
South Florida's hard water causes mineral deposits to clog the small holes in the spray arms. Remove the spray arms (they usually twist off) and soak them in white vinegar for 30 minutes. Use a toothpick to clear any blocked holes. Rinse and reinstall.
3. Run a Vinegar Cycle
Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the top rack and run a hot water cycle with an empty dishwasher. This dissolves mineral deposits, removes grease, and eliminates odors. Do this monthly in South Florida's hard water.
4. Clean the Door Seal
The rubber gasket around the dishwasher door is a breeding ground for mold in South Florida's humidity. Wipe it down monthly with a mixture of baking soda and water. Pay special attention to the folds where moisture collects.

Inspect the drain hose connection under the sink. Look for kinks, cracks, or loose connections. Ensure the hose has a high loop (or connects to an air gap) to prevent backflow from the garbage disposal.

Hard Water Solutions
Water hardness varies from one South Florida utility to the next, and many homes get water hard enough to leave white spots on glasses and scale on the spray arms and heating element. Your utility's annual water quality report states the hardness for your area. If you see the signs, consider these solutions:
- Use rinse aid — it prevents water spots and helps dishes dry faster

Cloudy Glasses: Mineral Film or Etching?
Cloudy glassware has two different causes, and the cure for one makes the other worse. To tell them apart, soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar for a few minutes. If it comes out clear, the cloudiness was a mineral film from hard water — more rinse aid, a monthly vinegar or cleaner cycle and the right amount of detergent will deal with it. If it stays cloudy, the glass is etched: the surface has been permanently roughened, usually by too much detergent in soft water or very hot washes. Etching cannot be reversed, so use less detergent and a gentler cycle to protect the rest of the set.
Why a Dishwasher Smells in a Humid Kitchen
A musty smell is almost always food and moisture sitting where air does not move: the filter, the sump under it, the bottom of the door, and the folds of the gasket. In our climate that residue does not dry out between washes, so it turns sour faster than it would somewhere cooler. Clean the filter, wipe the gasket and the door edge, and leave the door slightly open after each cycle. If the smell is more like sewage than mildew, check the drain hose: without a high loop or an air gap, water from the sink or disposal can flow back into the tub.
Loading Habits That Protect the Machine
- Scrape, don't pre-rinse. Modern detergents need some soil to work on, and large scraps belong in the trash, not the filter.
- Keep the spray arms free. Spin each arm by hand after loading; a tall pan handle or a utensil hanging through the rack can stop one dead.
- Don't block the detergent door. A baking sheet in front of the dispenser keeps the detergent in its cup for the whole cycle.
- Watch small items. Bottle caps, labels and broken glass end up in the filter or the pump, and a chip of glass in the pump is a repair, not a cleaning job.
