LG Washer UE Error Code: Causes & Fixes

UE (shown as uE on some models) means the washer could not balance the load for the spin cycle. It is not a fault code in the usual sense — the machine is refusing to spin rather than failing. LG washers detect an off-centre drum, stop, add water, redistribute and try again, sometimes several times, which is why a UE cycle takes far longer than a normal one. Most of the time the laundry is the cause. When it is not, it is the suspension holding the drum.

If the reset didn't clear UE / uE

A technician can come out and diagnose it, the same day when a window is open — $69 diagnostic, applied to the repair.

Common causes

One heavy item, or a load that is too small

A single bath mat, a duvet or one pair of jeans on their own cannot distribute around the drum. Counter-intuitively, a nearly empty machine throws UE more often than a full one.

The machine is not level

All four feet must be on the floor with no rock at all. A front-loader on an uneven laundry-room floor, or with one foot left retracted after delivery, will throw UE on heavy spins forever.

Worn suspension or shock absorbers

The dampers that control drum movement wear out, and the drum then swings far enough that the machine cannot certify it as balanced. Common on machines installed tight in a closet, where the drum has been working against a wall.

Overloading

A drum packed past its capacity cannot redistribute anything, because nothing has room to move.

What you can safely try

  1. Open the door and redistribute the load by hand. Spread items evenly around the drum. If it is a single heavy item, add two or three towels to give it something to balance against. Restart the spin.
  2. Check the machine is level and solid. Push down on each corner in turn. If it rocks, adjust the feet until it does not, then tighten the lock nuts. This one step ends a large share of UE calls.
  3. Run a spin-only cycle with nothing in the drum. An empty machine that spins up cleanly points at the laundry. An empty machine that still throws UE points at the suspension, and that is not a DIY repair.

When to call a professional

If an empty drum still cannot complete a spin, or the machine bangs hard against its cabinet on every high-speed cycle, the suspension or the dampers need replacing. Call us. Running a washer that cannot balance puts load on the bearings, and bearings on most modern washers mean replacing the outer tub — a repair that on an older machine costs more than the machine is worth.

What it costs

If you fix it yourself: $0 (redistributing the load, levelling the machine).

With a technician: A fixed price after diagnosis, agreed before any work starts; the diagnostic fee is applied to the repair when you approve it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my LG throw UE on small loads more than big ones?

Because a small load has nothing to balance against. One towel or a single pair of jeans sits on one side of the drum and stays there, and at spin speed that off-centre weight is exactly what the machine is built to refuse. Adding a couple of similar items usually solves it outright — a fuller drum distributes itself.

Is UE damaging my washer?

The code itself is the machine protecting itself, so no. What does damage it is ignoring the underlying cause: a machine that is not level, or one with worn dampers, lets the drum move much further than it should, and that load goes into the bearings. Bearings on most modern washers are part of the outer tub, so that is the repair worth avoiding.

I levelled it and it still shows UE. What now?

Run a spin cycle with the drum completely empty. If it spins up cleanly, the cause is genuinely how the laundry sits and you can manage it by loading differently. If an empty drum still throws UE, the suspension is no longer controlling the drum and it needs parts — that is where we come in.
