Which LG models show OE

An LG front-loader, WM in the model number, keeps its drain pump filter behind a square flap low on the front, with a short capped hose beside it for letting the drum's water out first. Many LG top-load washers, whose model numbers begin WT, have no filter the owner can open, so debris collects in the pump inlet instead and the hose and standpipe checks matter more. An LG dishwasher, with LD at the start of its model number, has a mesh cup and a flat screen set into the tub floor. The checks differ by machine, which is why the steps below name the appliance each time.

Common causes

Pump filter or tub filter blocked

On a front-load washer, coins, hair grips, lint and the odd baby sock pack the pump filter. On a dishwasher, food, grease and scale blind the mesh in the tub floor. Either way the pump ends up straining against a clogged screen.

Drain hose folded or narrowed

Shoving a washer back to the wall bends the drain line into a hairpin; a dishwasher slid into a tight opening can pinch its line on the cabinet's edge. Years of lint or grease also narrow a hose from the inside.

Standpipe, sink drain or disposal backing up

The machine can only drain as fast as the house drain accepts water. A laundry standpipe narrowing somewhere inside the wall, or a disposal full of food under a dishwasher, produces OE with a perfectly good pump.

Washer hose pushed too deep

A washer hose jammed deep into the standpipe and wrapped in tape can end up below the waterline in the trap and fight the pump. It belongs hooked over the lip, reaching only a little way down, with air around it.

Drain pump failed or jammed

A cracked impeller or a seized motor. A low hum during the drain with no water moving is the usual sign; total silence sends suspicion to the wiring feeding the pump, or the board.

What you can safely try

1. Unplug it, then lay out towels. Pull the plug or flip the LG's breaker. Spread towels and a shallow tray: an OE machine is holding its water, and the next step lets it out.
2. Front-load washer: drain and clean the pump filter. Open the little square flap low on the front, pull out the capped drain tube, uncap it over the tray and let the drum empty, emptying the tray as often as it fills. Then turn the filter slowly anticlockwise, clear it, and screw it back hand-tight.
3. Dishwasher: clean the tub filter. Scoop out standing water with a mug and sponge up the rest, remove the lower rack, lift the LG's filter cup and screen out of the tub floor, take them apart and scrub the mesh under warm water before refitting it.
4. Check the hose and the drain it empties into. Follow the hose for folds. For a washer, pour a bucket of water into the standpipe; if it rises and backs up, the trouble is in the house plumbing, not the washer. For a dishwasher, run the disposal briefly and check that the sink drains freely.
5. Plug back in and test a drain. On a washer, choose a spin-only or rinse-and-spin setting with the drum empty; on a dishwasher, a short rinse. Water should leave steadily within the first minute of the drain.

What to leave alone

Never unscrew an LG front-loader's pump filter all the way before the drum has been emptied through the little tube beside it; a full drum emptying through the filter opening floods the floor faster than towels can cope. Do not grip the filter cap with pliers, because it is plastic and cracks, and do not refit it cross-threaded, or it leaks at the next drain. On an LG dishwasher, take out only the filter assembly; the pump and the sump cover under it stay where they are. On either machine, leave the hose clamp where the drain line leaves the cabinet untouched, since a disturbed clamp leaks inside where nobody sees it.

When to call a professional

With a clean filter, a straight hose and a house drain that swallows a bucket of water without backing up, an LG that still cannot empty needs its pump, impeller or pump wiring tested. On a washer that means opening the cabinet with water close to the electrics; on a dishwasher it means unscrewing the brackets and drawing the unit forward. Call us. A washer full of water will not spin, and food water left in a closed dishwasher soon smells.

What the technician tests

1. Pump run from the test mode. LG machines have a service test that runs the pump on its own; the technician watches the level fall, or not, while it runs.
2. Pump resistance and supply. Read at the pump's own connector: power there with no water moving condemns the pump, while a dead connector puts the harness or the board in question.
3. Impeller and pump housing. With the filter out, the technician spins the impeller with a finger and feels the housing for debris lodged beyond the filter.
4. Water-level reading. On a washer whose drum is visibly empty while OE persists, the pressure sensor and the thin hose feeding it get checked: a false reading of water that is not there throws the very same code.

What does OE stand for on LG appliances?

Outlet error, meaning the drain. LG names its water codes by the direction of the water, in for filling and out for draining, so OE says water did not leave in time, on a washer or a dishwasher alike.

OE came back a week after I cleaned the filter. Why?

A clean filter fixes the block you can see. If the code returns, look further along the path: lint packed in the pump inlet past the filter, a hose narrowed inside, or a standpipe slowing down in the wall. Pour a bucket of water into the standpipe; if it rises, the house drain needs a plumber.

Can I open my LG washer door with OE showing?

Not while water is in the drum; the door stays locked by design. Let the drum out through the capped tube beside the filter, give the lock a minute or two to let go, and then open it.

Does OE on an LG dishwasher mean the pump has failed?

Usually not. A blinded filter, a disposal that needs running, or a hose pinched behind the kick plate all come before the pump. Check those first; if the sump still holds water with all of them clear, the pump or its check valve needs testing.

My LG washer shows OE before it has washed anything. Why so early?

Some LG washers run the drain pump briefly as a cycle begins, to clear any water left from the last wash. If the pump cannot empty even that little, the code appears before any washing has happened. The cause is the same as an OE at the end, and so are the checks: filter, hose and the standpipe.

How often should the drain filter on an LG front-loader be cleaned?

Every few months is a sensible habit, sooner in a house with pets or children whose pockets need emptying, and straight away whenever OE appears or the drum starts to smell. The owner's manual shows where the filter is and how it comes out; it takes ten minutes with a tray and a towel.
