Samsung Washer UE / UB Error Code: Causes & Fixes
UE and UB both report an unbalanced load. Samsung uses UE on most front-loaders and UB on many top-loaders, and the meaning is the same: the drum is off-centre and the machine will not bring it up to spin speed. It will refill, redistribute and retry, which is why the cycle stretches out long past its normal time. On top-loaders this often traces back to the suspension rods rather than the laundry.
If the reset didn't clear UE / UB
A technician can come out and diagnose it, the same day when a window is open — $69 diagnostic, applied to the repair.

Common causes
Uneven or single-item loads
A duvet, a bath mat or one heavy garment cannot distribute itself. Very small loads throw this more often than full ones, because there is nothing for the weight to balance against.
Suspension rods worn (top-loaders)
The four rods that hang the tub lose their damping over time. The tub then swings instead of settling, and the machine cannot certify it as balanced. This is the most common non-laundry cause on Samsung top-loaders.
The machine is not level
Any rock at all on the feet turns into drum movement at spin speed. A front-loader is particularly unforgiving of this.
Shipping bolts still fitted
On a recently delivered front-loader, bolts left in the back plate hold the drum rigid and produce violent noise plus an unbalance error on the first spin.
What you can safely try
- Redistribute the load and restart the spin. Spread items evenly. For a single bulky item, add two or three towels so it has something to sit against.
- Check the feet and, on a new machine, the shipping bolts. Push each corner down in turn — there should be no movement. On a machine delivered recently, look at the back panel and confirm the transit bolts were removed.
- Spin the empty drum. Nothing in the machine, spin-only cycle. A clean spin means the laundry is the cause. A UE or UB on an empty drum means the suspension is not doing its job.
When to call a professional
An empty drum that still cannot spin, or a top-loader whose tub knocks hard against the cabinet, needs suspension rods. Call us. It is a straightforward repair with a stocked part, and it is worth doing promptly — a tub allowed to swing puts its load into the bearings, which is a far larger job.
What it costs
If you fix it yourself: $0 (redistributing the load, levelling, removing transit bolts).
With a technician: A fixed price after diagnosis, agreed before any work starts; the diagnostic fee is applied to the repair when you approve it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between UE and UB on a Samsung?
Nothing, in practice. They are the same unbalance condition reported by different model families — UE is usual on front-loaders, UB on many top-loaders. The causes and the checks are identical, and so is the repair when it turns out not to be the laundry.
My Samsung top-loader bangs during spin and shows UB. Is that the load?
Sometimes, but a top-loader that knocks hard against its own cabinet is the classic sign of worn suspension rods. The rods hang the tub and damp its movement; once they are gone the tub swings freely on every spin. Test it with an empty drum — if it still knocks and errors with nothing inside, it is the rods.
Could this be why my cycles take so long?
Almost certainly. The machine does not simply give up when it detects unbalance — it refills, tumbles to redistribute and tries the spin again, sometimes several times over. A wash that used to take an hour can stretch well past two before the error is finally displayed.
