Samsung Washer 4C (4E) Error Code: Causes & Fixes
4C (shown as 4E on older Samsung washers) means the machine did not see enough water arrive during the fill. When a cycle starts, the control board opens the water inlet valve and watches the water-level sensor, and it expects the level to rise to a set point within a time window. If the level barely moves, or never reaches that point, the board stops the cycle and shows 4C rather than wash a dry drum. The code is a measurement of what came in, not a diagnosis: anything between the house shut-off and the valve inside the washer can cause it. Some Samsung models add a digit to narrow it down; on several top-loaders 4C2 reports water arriving too hot at the cold inlet, which points at swapped hoses.
If the reset didn't clear 4C / 4E
A technician can come out and diagnose it, the same day when a window is open — $69 diagnostic, applied to the repair.

Which Samsung models show 4C / 4E
The code reads the same on Samsung front-loaders, top-loaders and the washer half of a stacked Samsung pair. The inlet valve sits at the back, where the hoses attach, which is why the owner checks happen there. Where a model splits 4C into numbered sub-codes, the user manual lists them; the digit refines the cause, but the first checks do not change. Bespoke and other recent models may also report the fault in the SmartThings app with a short description, which is a convenient way to note exactly what the display showed before a visit.
Common causes
Water supply off or low pressure
A closed or partly-open tap, or low household water pressure, prevents the washer from filling. After plumbing work, or a building-wide water shut-off in a condo, the valves behind the washer are often left half-closed.
Kinked inlet hose
A bent or crushed fill hose behind the unit restricts flow. Pushing the washer back against the wall after cleaning folds the hose, and an old rubber hose can collapse inside where it bends even when it looks fine from outside.
Clogged inlet mesh filters
The small mesh screens where the hoses connect collect sediment — common with South Florida hard water. Grit loosened by work on the water main tends to land here first.
Hot and cold hoses swapped
If the code carries a 2, or shows only on cold cycles, check that the hose on the washer's cold inlet really comes from the cold tap. Swapped hoses are an easy mistake after a move or a new install.
Faulty water inlet valve
The valve is a pair of electrically operated solenoids. If a coil fails, or its small internal diaphragm sticks, no water enters even when supply is fine — you hear the machine click or hum, but no rush of water follows.
Water-level sensor or its tube
Less often, water does come in and the board simply does not register it, because the level sensor or the thin tube that connects it to the tub is blocked or split. The sign is water visibly in the drum while the display still reports 4C.
What you can safely try
- Check the taps. Make sure both hot and cold supply valves are fully open. On a lever-style valve the handle should sit in line with the pipe, not across it.
- Straighten the hoses. Pull the washer out and remove any kinks in the fill hoses, then push it back leaving a hand's width between the cabinet and the wall.
- Clean the mesh filters. Turn off the water, unscrew the hoses, and rinse the inlet mesh screens — a frequent fix with hard water. Keep a towel and a bucket ready, because the hoses hold water, and refit each screen before reconnecting: running without it lets grit into the valve.
- Test the supply into a bucket. With a hose off the washer and its end in a bucket, open the tap briefly. A strong, steady stream means the house side is fine and the fault is at or inside the machine; a weak trickle means the supply or the hose itself.
- Power reset. Unplug for 5 minutes and restart to clear a temporary fault.
When to call a professional
If the supply runs strongly into a bucket, the screens are clean and 4C persists, the fault is inside the washer: the inlet valve has likely failed and needs replacement, or the water-level sensor, its tube or the wiring to the board is at fault. Testing those means opening the cabinet and checking the valve coils with a meter, which is a job for a technician. Close the taps between loads until then, because a valve that has started to fail can also stick open and fill without stopping. What the technician tests
- Valve coil resistance. Each coil of the inlet valve is measured; an open coil means a new valve, and a good one moves the test to its supply.
- Flow through each port. Water is run through the hot and cold ports in turn to find a valve that opens only part way on one side.
- Level sensor and tube. When water arrives but the control does not see it, the level sensor and its tube to the tub are checked for a blockage or a split.
- Control output to the valve. The voltage the control sends during the fill is measured; no output through a sound harness points at the board.
What it costs
If you fix it yourself: $0.
With a technician: A fixed price after diagnosis, agreed before any work starts; the diagnostic fee is applied to the repair when you approve it.
Frequently asked questions
What does 4C mean on a Samsung washer?
4C (also shown as 4E) is a water-supply error — the washer isn't getting enough water during the fill, usually a closed tap, kinked hose, clogged inlet filter, or a failed inlet valve.
How do I fix a Samsung 4C error?
Check the supply taps are fully open, straighten the fill hoses, and clean the mesh filters at the hose connections. If it persists, the inlet valve likely needs replacement.
Why does 4C happen with hard water?
South Florida's hard water leaves sediment in the inlet mesh screens, restricting flow and triggering 4C. Cleaning the screens often clears it.
Is 4C the same as 4E?
Yes. Older Samsung washers display 4E for the water-supply fault and newer ones display 4C, sometimes followed by a digit that narrows the cause. Samsung top-loaders and front-loaders use the same code for the same condition, and the owner checks on this page apply to both.
Should I keep the water on while I wait for a repair?
Close both taps between loads. If the cause turns out to be the inlet valve rather than the supply, a valve that has started to misbehave can stick open as easily as it sticks shut, and the taps are the only thing that would stop it.
