Maytag's history has two halves, and the half your machine belongs to decides how it gets repaired. Until 2006 Maytag built its own designs in Newton, Iowa: the Dependable Care top-loaders with their two-belt drive, the Neptune front-loaders, the Performa line inherited from Magic Chef and the Amana-built refrigerators. Since Whirlpool bought the company, every new Maytag has been a Whirlpool platform with a Maytag badge and heavier-duty marketing — the Bravos and Centennial top-loaders are Cabrio and vertical-modular-washer designs, the Maxima front-loaders are Duets, and the kitchen appliances share parts catalogues with Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Amana.

On a 2010s top-loader that means knowing the mode shifter, the splutch and the suspension rods; on a 1990s Dependable Care it means knowing which of the two belts has glazed and that the transmission is probably still fine. Common Maytag problems

Top-loader fills, drains, but never spins

On the Bravos and Centennial platforms the motor drives the basket through a shifter and actuator that moves between agitate and spin. When the actuator's internal cam or optical sensor fails, the machine agitates but will not shift into spin and usually throws an F7 E1 or F7 E5 code. The actuator, the drive hub splines and the lid lock are each tested; a stripped hub produces the same no-spin without the code.

Loud banging in spin, clothes still soaked

Four suspension rods hold the basket on these top-loaders, and when the dampers in the rods wear the basket strikes the cabinet and the control aborts the spin as an off-balance load. Overloading accelerates it. Rods are replaced as a set, and we check the basket bearing at the same time because a rough bearing produces its own grinding.

Front-loader roars in spin

Maxima and the older Neptune front-loaders carry the drum on a bearing and spider at the back of the outer tub. When the bearing fails the spin sounds like a jet, water weeps from the seal, and the spider can corrode and crack. We confirm it by rocking the drum and inspecting the seal; the repair is a bearing and seal kit or a rear tub, and we discuss the age of the machine with you before that quote.

Dryer heats, then stops heating mid-load

A gas Maytag that lights for a few minutes and then runs cold has gas valve coils that open when cold and fail once warm — a classic fault on the Whirlpool 29-inch platform. An electric dryer that does the same has a cycling thermostat or a restricted vent tripping the high-limit. Rollers, idler and belt are inspected during the same visit because a squeal and a heat fault often arrive together.

On Maytag's Whirlpool-platform French-door and side-by-side models, fresh-food freezing comes from a damper stuck open, a thermistor reading warm, or a control board holding the compressor on. A top-freezer with a cold-control thermostat is a simpler test. We measure the thermistor against its chart and watch the damper before replacing either.

Dishwasher will not latch, or starts and stops

The Whirlpool-platform door latch has a strike plate and a pair of switches, and a latch that feels mushy is a latch that is letting the control lose the door signal mid-cycle. The same interruption can come from a tripped thermal fuse on the control or a float switch lifted by a leak in the base, so all three are checked.

Frequently asked questions

My Maytag Bravos shows F7 E1. Do I need a new motor?

Usually not. F7 E1 is the control reporting that the basket speed it measured does not match what it commanded, and the shifter/actuator or the optical sensor inside it is the first suspect, with the drive hub and the lid lock behind it. The motor itself is tested with a meter before it is ever quoted.

Is a Maytag really built better than a Whirlpool?

Since 2006 they are built in the same factories on the same platforms; the Maytag badge brings a heavier lid or door, some upgraded components, and whatever manufacturer warranty Maytag attaches to the model. For repair purposes we treat the two as one family and cross-reference parts between them.

Can you work on a 1990s Maytag Dependable Care washer?

Yes, and they are often worth it. The two-belt drive, the pump and the lid switch are the normal wear items, and the transmission and motor tend to outlive everything else. If the tub bearing or outer tub has gone we will say so rather than sell a repair that costs more than the machine is worth.

My Maytag gas dryer gets warm for ten minutes then goes cold. Vent?

Possibly, but that pattern on a gas dryer is the signature of failing gas valve coils, which open when cool and drop out once heated. We confirm it by watching the burner through the inspection port as the coils warm, and we check the vent and the cycling thermostat in the same visit so the fix is complete.

Do you service Maytag Commercial washers in condo laundry rooms?

Yes. The coin- and card-operated top-loaders and stacked dryers use the same basic drive and heat systems as the residential platform with heavier components, and the control and the payment interface are separate parts. We work with property managers on access and on scheduling around residents.
