How emergency service works

1. Call and describe it. Tell the dispatcher what the appliance is doing. Emergencies — water, gas, sparking, a warm refrigerator — go to the front of the queue.
2. A technician is dispatched. We aim for the same day when a technician window is open; arrival depends on location and the day's workload, and you get an honest window rather than a guess.
3. Diagnose and fix. The technician finds the fault and quotes a fixed price before any work. Common parts travel on the truck, so many repairs finish in the same visit.

While you wait: safety tips

Water leak

Turn off the water supply valve behind or under the appliance. Mop up standing water to prevent floor damage.

Electrical sparking

Unplug the appliance immediately. Do not touch it if the floor is wet. Turn off the circuit breaker if needed.

Gas smell

Leave the house immediately. Do not flip light switches or use your phone inside. Call 911 from outside, then call us.

Refrigerator failure

Keep the doors closed. A closed refrigerator stays cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours.

Before the technician arrives

Stopping the water

Every appliance that uses water has its own shut-off. A dishwasher's is usually a small valve under the kitchen sink; a washer has two taps on the wall behind it, one hot and one cold; the ice maker in a refrigerator is fed by a thin line from a valve under the sink or behind the refrigerator. A round handle turns clockwise until it stops, and a lever turns a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe.

If the valve will not move, or you cannot find it, close the main valve for the home. In a condo it is often in a utility closet or a hallway service room, and the front desk or maintenance staff can show you. Then switch the appliance off so it stops calling for water, and put towels down where the water is heading rather than where it has already been.

Cutting the power

If an appliance sparked, smoked or smells of hot plastic, pull its plug only if you can reach it without standing in water or touching the metal cabinet. Otherwise go to the breaker panel and switch off its circuit; ranges and dryers usually sit on a double breaker with their own label.

If a breaker trips again after you reset it once, leave it off. A breaker that keeps tripping is reporting a fault, and resetting it repeatedly only asks the fault to do it again. When the cause turns out to be the outlet or the wiring in the wall rather than the appliance, that is work for an electrician, and we will tell you so.

If you smell gas

Leave first and take everyone with you. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off, do not light anything, and do not make a call until you are outside. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency number, which is printed on the gas bill, and stay out until the fire department or the utility says the home is safe.

Only after that is it our turn. We find out why the range, oven or dryer let gas escape and repair the appliance itself; the gas piping inside the walls and under the floor belongs to a gas plumber.

Saving the food

Keep the doors shut and resist checking. A thermometer inside the refrigerator tells you more than an open door does. Food-safety guidance from the USDA is to throw out perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than two hours, so if the wait runs long, move milk, meat, leftovers and any refrigerated medicine into a cooler with ice.

What to tell the dispatcher

The appliance and its brand, what it is doing right now, and whether the water or power is already off. Then how a technician gets in: gate code, front desk, parking, a pet that needs to be shut away. A photo of the model plate and of any error code on the display helps the technician bring the right part.

Emergencies that are not ours

A burst pipe in the wall, a leaking water heater, an air conditioner that has quit or a panel that has lost power are not appliance faults, and we do not repair them. Call a plumber, an air-conditioning company or an electrician for those; calling us first only delays the person who can fix it.
