Whirlpool appliances in a modern kitchen

Whirlpool appliances use a dual-code system combining F (Function) and E (Error) codes to pinpoint specific problems. Understanding these codes can save you time and money by helping you determine whether a simple fix will work or if professional repair is needed.

Whirlpool Washer Error Codes

F5 E2 — Door Lock Error

The washer can't lock or unlock the door. Fix: Check for obstructions in the door latch area. Try a power reset. If the error persists, the door lock assembly needs replacement. Read our detailed F5 E2 guide.

F9 E1 — Long Drain Error

The washer is taking too long to drain. Fix: Check the drain hose for kinks. Clean the drain pump filter. Ensure the drain hose isn't inserted too far into the standpipe (maximum 8 inches).

F8 E1 — Water Supply Error

The washer isn't detecting enough water flow. Fix: Verify both hot and cold supply valves are fully open. Check inlet hose screens for sediment. If the error persists, the water inlet valve may need replacement.

F7 E1 — Motor Speed Sensing Error

The motor can't achieve the correct speed. Fix: Check for an overloaded drum. If the load size is normal, the motor control board or motor itself may need professional attention.

Whirlpool Oven/Range Error Codes

F2 E1 — Oven Temperature Too High

The oven has exceeded safe temperature limits. Fix: Cancel the current cycle and allow the oven to cool. If the error recurs, the oven temperature sensor or control board may be faulty. Read our detailed F2 E1 guide.

F3 E2 — Oven Temperature Sensor Open

The temperature sensor circuit is broken. Fix: The sensor probe (usually at the top rear of the oven cavity) needs testing and likely replacement. This is a common and affordable repair.

F9 E0 — Door Lock Error (Oven)

The oven door lock mechanism has failed, usually during or after a self-clean cycle. Fix: Try a power reset. If the door remains locked, the lock motor or switch may need replacement.

Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes

F8 E4 — Water Supply Error

The dishwasher isn't getting enough water. Fix: Check the water supply valve under the sink. Inspect the inlet hose and float switch.

F2 E2 — Long Drain Error

The dishwasher can't drain within the expected time. Fix: Clean the filter assembly. Check the drain hose and garbage disposal connection.

Whirlpool Dryer Error Codes

F1 — Control Board Error

The main electronic control board has detected an internal fault. Fix: Try a power reset. If the error returns, the control board likely needs replacement — a job for a professional technician.

AF — Restricted Airflow

The dryer has detected restricted exhaust airflow. Fix: Clean the lint trap and entire exhaust duct. Check the exterior vent for blockage.
